Falkirk stunned Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic 2-0 at Falkirk Stadium on 1 November, with first-half goals from Ethan Ross and Scott Tanser handing the champions only their second league defeat of the season. The result keeps Celtic top of the table but leaves their lead at four points, having played a game more than Rangers.

Falkirk struck inside three minutes, when Ross pounced from close range after a cross from the right was deflected into his path. Celtic, who had the chance to move seven points clear, struggled to turn heavy possession into goals, and fell further behind in the 38th minute when Tanser burst through the defence from Owen Eames' through ball and finished past goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Former Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain was the hero of the second half for the hosts, making a string of saves to deny Camilo Durán, James Forrest and others as Celtic fired in 24 shots without scoring. It was Falkirk's first win over Celtic in 19 years, and their fourth consecutive Premiership victory, moving them up to fourth place. Celtic manager Martin O'Neill pointed to his side's wasted chances afterwards, saying they had created enough opportunities to have won several games, and praised Bain as man of the match.

What the result means for the title race

Celtic remain on 28 points from 12 games, four ahead of Rangers, who have a game in hand after playing in the League Cup at the weekend. Falkirk, unbeaten in their last four league matches with three clean sheets in a row, have given themselves a genuine platform for a top-six push. Celtic now turn to a Europa League tie against Besiktas on Thursday before hosting Kilmarnock in their final match before the international break.
