UN condemns Myanmar maternity and school strikes

The United Nations has condemned strikes in Myanmar over the weekend of 1–2 November 2026 that hit a maternity ward and a school, killing at least 15 people including a newborn baby, according to a UN News bulletin on 4 November. The strikes themselves were at the weekend, not on 4 November, and are dated honestly here.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned the killing of a newborn baby in an attack on a maternity ward in Mrauk-U, Rakhine state. The week-old baby girl had a surviving twin and was due home the following day, according to an aid worker quoted in the reports, who said she was crushed and killed when the building collapsed from the blast.

Weekend strikes across several locations

Reuters reported on 2 November that at least 15 people were killed in Myanmar military strikes at multiple locations over the weekend, including a maternity clinic and a school, citing an ethnic armed group, an aid worker and rights monitors. In Rakhine, Sunday strikes hit four townships — a bridge in Kyauktaw, locations in Kyaukpyu and Pauktaw, and a makeshift clinic and maternity ward in Arakan Army-held Mrauk-U — killing at least 12 and wounding 32. A Saturday airstrike on an educational centre in Loikaw Township, Kayah state, reportedly killed three children.

Attribution to the Myanmar military is as reported by Reuters sources and monitors; the UN item does not itself name the attacker in the material checked, and no military admission is claimed here. WHO counts this as the 62nd verified attack on healthcare in Myanmar this year, with verification limited by insecurity and blocked communications.
