Newcastle United beat Crystal Palace 2-0 and Bournemouth beat Manchester United 3-0 in Sunday's Premier League fixtures, while Hull City drew 1-1 with Brentford. The results deepened Manchester United's crisis and gave Newcastle a valuable away win at Selhurst Park.

At Selhurst Park, William Osula put Newcastle ahead in the 47th minute and Harvey Barnes doubled the lead in the 58th, sealing a 2-0 win for the visitors. At Old Trafford, Bournemouth won 3-0 against a Manchester United side whose captain, Bruno Fernandes, spent the entire match on the bench.

Fernandes benched amid controversy

Fernandes was left out of the starting side after questioning head coach Michael Carrick's tactics following Wednesday's 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como, in which he suggested the decision not to press high had played a part in the loss. Asked by Sky Sports whether the captain had been dropped for football reasons or something else, Carrick replied simply: "Pure football." Fernandes did not come on during another poor United performance.

United have now gone eight games without a win, and the defeat increases the pressure on Carrick, who had already declined to rule out dropping Fernandes or removing the armband at his pre-match press conference on Friday. At Hull, Oli McBurnie gave the home side the lead from the penalty spot in the 24th minute before Dango Ouattara equalised for Brentford in the 63rd minute.
