New Zealand kept their unbeaten record against Scotland intact with a 43-21 win at Murrayfield on Saturday, pulling clear in the second half of a Nations Championship match that had been finely balanced at the break.

Scotland trailed by only three points at half-time, 24-21, after a remarkable opening 40 minutes produced seven tries. But the All Blacks scored 19 unanswered points after the interval, and Scotland failed to add to their tally in the second half.

Hooker Ewan Ashman was the story of the first half for the hosts, scoring three tries to become the first Scotland player to record a hat-trick against New Zealand. His tries came in the 8th, 26th and 38th minutes, all converted by Finn Russell, and the third arrived from another driving lineout maul while New Zealand were down to 14 men.

New Zealand's tries in the first half came from Wallace Sititi, Ethan de Groot, Peter Lakai and Beauden Barrett, who crossed twice in the match. The visitors led 24-21 at the break despite yellow cards for Lakai and Sititi in the opening period.

The second half belonged to the All Blacks. Barrett added his second try, Josh Moorby crossed, and Asafo Aumua completed the scoring with the visitors' seventh try. Damian McKenzie converted four of New Zealand's tries, while Russell converted all three of Scotland's.

Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu was sent to the sin-bin in the second half as his side's discipline faltered, and head coach Gregor Townsend admitted afterwards that his team had fallen below expectations.

The win was New Zealand's 32nd in 34 Tests against Scotland, with two draws, in a fixture that dates back to 1905. Scotland have still never beaten the All Blacks.
