Trump says Iran deal 'within reach' as Tehran reviews US proposal

US President Donald Trump has said a deal with Iran could be within reach, saying the United States has held very good talks with Tehran, as Iran says it is still reviewing a US proposal delivered through mediator Pakistan. Speaking at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said Iran wants to make a deal badly and that one was very possible.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, said the proposal remains under review and Tehran will reply to Pakistan once it has finalised its views. Iran has played down reports that an agreement is close, saying it has yet to present its response.
The reported 14-point framework
Reuters, citing a Pakistani source and another person briefed on the mediation, reported the two sides were close to agreeing on a one-page memorandum to formally end the conflict, while Axios reported they were getting close on a 14-point document. Under the reported terms, Iran would agree not to develop a nuclear weapon and halt uranium enrichment for at least 12 years, while the US would lift sanctions, release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets, and both sides would reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days of signing. Those terms rest on unnamed sources and are contested.
Iranian officials pushed back. Lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei described the US text as more of an American wish list than a reality, the semi-official Tasnim news agency said the proposal contained some unacceptable provisions, and parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf mocked the Axios report on social media. Iran has refused to surrender its roughly 400kg of highly enriched uranium, insisting it is not for weapons, and its supreme leader has warned of a wider war if talks fail. Pakistan's prime minister has said he is hopeful the talks will succeed. No deal has been signed.
